The Downbeat Show
Dave
Alternate Mondays 19:30 to 21:30
Dave operates out of the Beagle Radio South studio in rural Te Kauwhata. He dials in his show each fortnight from his woolshed. Dave was the first farmer in NZ to have turntables retro-fitted in his tractor cab. It’s a cruel rumour that Dave’s mixing skills have evolved out of driving over winter rutted paddocks. Dave took over the Monday night slot from Richard in early 2017.
Dave regularly gets asked by friends/listeners “where is a good place to get info on new/old music”.
He follows 3 podcasts/mix cloud shows pretty religiously.
Search Four Tet and Floating Points on Mix cloud. They occasionally do a show together which is good for soul/funk.
Andrew Weatherall does a monthly show on NTS radio which can be found on Mixcloud. It’s called ‘Music’s Not for Everyone’. He plays old and new stuff. He has a great taste in music. It’s an amazing show and has opened up a lot of new avenues for Dave.
Stinky Jim is another fantastic source for music – and he’s local. His show on bfm has been around for 27 years – it’s great for dub and electronica. Stinky Jim’s show is 3 hours long.
There are a couple of sites Dave follows for music reviews; The Vinyl Factory and Norman Records. Each site has a weekly news letter. Highly recommended. Both The Vinyl Factory and Norman Records reviews are brutally honest as to whether an album is crap or not. Norman Records journos are great writers too.
